The topic on the table this morning is data: mining it, refining it and using it. The insurance industry, of course, has always embraced the most advanced ways of working with data. That’s why you have organizations like ACORD. Data is your bread and butter. It’s what actuaries feed on. They’re voracious. They’re the original “data-vores”. And today they use data not just to measure and calculate risk, but to define market segments, gauge returns on investment and monitor leverage.

Thank you, Jorge. Good morning, everyone. As always, it’s a pleasure to take part in a gathering of ACSDA members. It gives me a chance to catch up with old friends, make new friends, and share ideas and plans with my colleagues in the infrastructure business.
It’s also an honor to be here in Cartagena, because this city has an unusual link to General George Washington, the first president of the United States. About 40 years before General Washington became president, his older brother, Lawrence Washington, accompanied the British Admiral Edward Vernon to Cartagena.

Derivatives Market Regulation: A View from the United States
Trade repositories are, in fact, an essential part of Dodd-Frank. Along with swap execution facilities and clearinghouses, they form the three pillars of the Dodd-Frank infrastructure. Repositories are the key to bringing transparency to the swaps derivatives markets because they will hold the underlying transaction data on all swaps derivatives trades.
