In 2015, tremendous interest built-up in financial services that the technology behind Bitcoin—distributed ledgers—could potentially modernize and simplify the post-trade process, as well as reduce costs and risks in securities processing. It is important to note, however, that there are significant hurdles that need to be overcome to make this distributed ledger technology workable in today’s securities markets. Distributed ledgers face scale and performance challenges, as well as integration issues.

DTCC identified the potential and limitations of distributed ledgers in its recent white paper, Embracing Disruption: Tapping the Potential of Distributed Ledgers to Improve the Post-Trade Landscape.

“Industry collaboration presents the best and most transparent opportunity to integrate a financial industry distributed ledger ecosystem with the existing market infrastructures to further lower risks and costs for all market participants,” Palatnick said. “A partnership between existing regulated and trusted infrastructure organizations can help drive new innovation and opportunities that support the interests of post-trade processing and promote long-standing goals of mitigating risk, enhancing efficiencies and driving cost efficiencies for all market participants.”

The International Securities Association for Institutional Trade Communication (ISITC) Annual Industry Forum and Vendor Show brings together speakers, insightful topics, and provides unique networking opportunities to engage with leading financial industry executives and some of the world’s most innovative solution and service providers.
