Last week, I proudly joined with other Florida business community leaders in signing the Florida Competitive Workforce Act (FCWA) on behalf of DTCC. The FCWA is designed to make Florida more competitive in the national and global marketplace through adopting LGBTQ+ non-discrimination policies. It’s protection for our community and future generations, while supporting Florida’s economic reputation.
In 2015, a group of Florida’s top employers sent a letter to then Florida Governor Rick Scott, former State Senate President Andy Gardiner and former State House Speaker Steve Crisafulli, asking them to support the FCWA. Unfortunately, after much publicity and support from the private sector and a number of legislators, in 2016 the Senate Judiciary Committee did not advance the FCWA.
But it did not stop there. LGBTQ+ Floridians and supporters, like DTCC, continued to rally and boost LGBTQ+ civil rights and protection against discrimination. With renewed confidence and increased support from both Republicans and Democrats, the FCWA was once again petitioned in the 2018 and 2019 legislative sessions. To date, the FCWA has a record-breaking co-sponsor count of 70+ sponsors and continues to be on the campaign to be filed in the senate.
At DTCC, we believe that in order for our employees to grow and develop their fullest potential professionally and personally, we need an environment that fully embraces and accepts who they are and who they want to be. As we support the Florida Competitive Workforce Act, we are extending the environment we have created within our organization to our community.
