Why PSET Matters for T+1 Settlement

With less time available to investigate discrepancies, firms must identify and address potential problems as early as possible.

As Europe prepares for the transition to T+1 settlement in October 2027, firms face a significantly shorter timeframe to allocate, match and settle trades. Success will depend not only on faster processes, but also on higher-quality data.

The Place of Settlement – PSET – identifies the intended location for settlement. It provides counterparties with settlement-location information earlier in the trade lifecycle. The importance of PSET has grown as Europe moves closer to T+1, with the complexities of the European market and cross-border settlement making PSET important information for reducing the risk of settlement failure in an accelerated settlement environment.

With less time available to investigate discrepancies, firms must identify and address potential problems as early as possible. Capturing PSET earlier in the trade lifecycle can help counterparties identify and address potential settlement-location issues before instructions are generated, reducing manual intervention, downstream exceptions and the risk of settlement failure.

ESMA’s Regulatory Technical Standards require PSET population on all allocations from 7 December 2026 will require in-scope allocation messages to include specified settlement information, including PSET. To support client readiness and broader T+1 preparations, DTCC worked closely with clients, partners and market participants over an 18-month period to make population of the PSET field mandatory for applicable CTM® transactions from 3 October 2026.

Implementing this enhancement approximately one year before the UK, EU and Swiss transitions to T+1 was a deliberate decision, providing firms with additional time to prepare for applicable requirements and helping lay the groundwork for the move to T+1 settlement.

This was a major milestone for the industry in the journey to T+1 and implementation of the mandate has been a clear success. Industry adoption levels have increased significantly, with 99.98% of CTM allocations being enriched with PSETs in the first week of implementation, demonstrating both the scalability of the approach and the industry's willingness to embrace greater automation.

Ultimately, the PSET mandate is about more than compliance. It is an opportunity for the industry to improve data quality, reduce operational risk and strengthen settlement efficiency. As the move to T+1 approaches, firms that standardize and automate the capture and exchange of settlement location data will be better positioned to support timely and accurate settlement processing.
