The race for faster settlement cycles is on

Following the successful implementation of T+1 in the U.S., Europe is now preparing to adopt T+1 settlement in October 2027.

This represents a major step forward in modernising financial markets, reducing risk, and enhancing competitiveness.

Careful planning, stakeholder collaboration, and robust testing will be critical to ensure a smooth transition and to help firms realize the full benefits of accelerated settlement cycles.

How we can help

Navigating Market Complexity

With their complex, interconnected markets, the UK, EU, Switzerland and Liechtenstein face significant challenges in moving to T+1 settlement. Not only are there multiple geographies, but market participants face myriad processing schedules and different tax systems, business models and legal frameworks across 27 EU jurisdictions and over 30 central securities depositories (CSDs).

Upgrading Technology and Automating Manual Processes

Major financial market participants, and especially those with legacy technologies, may have to invest in upgrading systems to handle the compressed timeframe, and the costs for automating manual processes will be a key part of the migration.

Target Operating Model

Every firm must review its operating model to ensure adequate support across time zones. Firms that rely on manual workflows or fragmented infrastructures will face increased risk of settlement failures, operational bottlenecks, and assuming that there is no change to the current rules, even financial penalties under the EU-CSDR regime.
