Anthony (Tony) J. Murphy is an independent director of SMBC Americas Holdings Inc., where he chairs the Board Risk Committee. He also recently served on the boards of several of SMBC’s U.S. subsidiaries active in securities and derivatives markets.
In prior roles, Tony was a managing director at Promontory Financial Group, an IBM Company, where he advised a wide range of global financial sector institutions, market associations and public sector authorities on business strategy, governance and financial, operational and conduct risk management across all major geographies. Tony spent 20 years at HSBC Holdings plc, most recently as CEO of Global Banking and Markets, Americas. He also worked as the firm’s head of strategic implementation for North America. Earlier in his career at HSBC, he held several positions in markets businesses including, CEO of the U.S. broker-dealer and head of market risk management in Europe and the U.S. Tony also served on the Management Committee at Bridgewater Associates LP.
Tony earned two B.A. degrees, in experimental physics and mathematics, both from Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland. He received a Doctorate in theoretical particle physics from Oxford University, U.K. He is also a Fellow of the U.K. Institute of Actuaries.
